Importance of culture

To follow up on my last post about getting things done it's important to look at how you build your team up and how do you introduce a culture within the business that helps you thrive.

Brian Chesky the founder of airbnb talks about the importance of setting core values for the company, setting up values that the company doesn't stray away from. It's important to not confuse your core values with general values that all companies should aim to be, being honest, fair, ethical, etc... Your core values should be what set you apart, what defines you as a business.

Setting clear values helps to guide the work in the right direction and add meaning to the work. If the values that the team work towards are clear and meaningful it will help them get motivated about solving the problems needed to move forward as mentioned in the previous post.

In his lecture Ideas, Products, Teams and Execution Sam Altman talks about the importance of hiring the right people, especially the first hire. Bringing someone into the team can make or break the company and the culture you are trying to introduce. Brian Chesky for instance spent 5 months interviewing for their first hire to makes sure they had the perfect fit.

In order to keep the momentum going and keep the business growing it's important to set the vision, define the core values and hire people that fit within that. If you fail at theses steps in the beginning it hard and sometimes impossible to succeed as a startup.
